Background of StairClimber

StairClimbers was started by a group of students of the College of Medicine at SUNY Downstate.

StairClimber Tenets:

1) Display a StairClimber button (usually on a bag)

2) When two StairClimbers meet, both take the stairs.

Benefits of Accumulated Exercise (e.g. multiple short bouts)

  • Exercise and postprandial lipemia: effect of continuous compared with intermittent activity patterns
  • Effects of Long versus Short Bout Exercise on Fitness and Weight Loss in Overweight Females
  • Training Effects of Accumulated Daily Stair-Climbing Exercise in Previously Sedentary Young Women
  • Heart rate, oxygen uptake, and energy cost of ascending and descending the stairs.

Effectiveness of StairClimbing Promotion

  • Promoting Stair Use: Single Versus Multiple Stair-Riser Messages
  • Using signs, artwork, and music to promote stair use in a public building.
